How to Use This Template
Step 1 — Download and open
Click the download button and open the file in Microsoft Word 2016 or later.
Step 2 — Update the project title and overview table
Replace “[Project Name]” in the title and fill in all fields in the overview table, including project manager, sponsor, dates, budget, and priority.
Step 3 — Define your objectives
Write a one sentence overall goal, then add two to three specific, measurable objectives that define what project success looks like.
Step 4 — Set the scope
List everything the project will deliver in the In Scope column. Explicitly list anything that will not be part of this project in the Out of Scope column to prevent misunderstandings later.
Step 5 — Build your milestone timeline
Replace the sample milestones with your project’s real phases and deliverables. Add realistic start and end dates for each milestone. Update the status column as the project progresses.
Step 6 — Identify risks
Think through what could go wrong and add your risks to the risk register. For each risk, rate the likelihood and impact as Low, Medium, or High, and write a clear mitigation strategy.
Step 7 — Share with stakeholders
Export to PDF and share with your project team and sponsors. Update the document version number and Last Updated date at the bottom each time you revise it.
